García,Radamés L.; Feraud,Dania; Lugo,Sonia; Machado,Héctor; Abeledo,María A..

Detection of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in wild animals in Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Silva,Rodrigo Costa da; Machado,Gustavo Puglia; Cruvinel,Tatiane Morosini de Andrade; Cruvinel,Ciro Alexandre; Langoni,Helio.
Background Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide zoonosis caused by an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite,Toxoplasma gondii, that affects all warm-blooded animals, including wild animals. The increased number of cases of parasitic infections is mainly due to the destruction of environmental conservation areas, which is driving wild animals out of their habitats and towards urban areas. In this study, the occurrence of T. gondii infection was investigated by the modified agglutination test (MAT) in 26 different species of run over and injured wild animals that were treated at a Brazilian university veterinary hospital, from June 2007 to August 2008.Findings Of the studied animals, six (23.1%; CI95% 11.1-42.2%) had T. gondii antibodies, with titers equal to 10...

Abstract Background: Leptospirosis is an infectious and acute disease caused by Leptospira spp. that have high epidemic potential. This study verified the main Leptospira spp. serovars detected by MAT from serum of patients with suspicion of leptospirosis from 2008 to 2012 in Minas Gerais State. Methods: The laboratory received sera from 4654 patients. All serum were screened by IgM-ELISA according to the manufacturer's instructions. Each sample reactive or indeterminate were tested against twenty-four serovars of Leptospira by MAT. Results: In this study, 597 patients were classified as reactive on MAT. Only 301 patients were confirmed by laboratory test. It was not possible confirmation by laboratory diagnosis of 296 patients. Among the samples...

Interference of vaccinal antibodies on serological diagnosis of leptospirosis in vaccinated buffalo using two types of commercial vaccines BJM
Nardi Júnior,Geraldo de; Genovez,Margareth Elide; Ribeiro,Marcio Garcia; Castro,Vanessa; Jorge,André Mendes.
The vaccinal antibodies interference represents one of the Microscopic Agglutination test - MAT limitation in the animal leptospirosis serum diagnosis. Prospective studies showing the dimensions of this effect are rare in buffaloes. This study aimed to determine the anti-Leptospira serum agglutinin profile in vaccinated female buffaloes using two types of commercial vaccines against leptospirosis: bacterin (whole bacterial cell) and purified outer membrane and to evaluate the vaccinal interference on serum diagnosis. Three groups of 11 adult buffalo females were established: G1-control, non-vaccinated, G2- vaccinated with bacterin vaccine with six serovars, G3- outer membrane purified vaccine with five serovars. A booster dose was administrated 30 days...

Leptospiral antibodies in wild boars (Sus scrofa) bred in Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Fornazari,F; Camossi,LG; Silva,RC; Guazzelli,A; Ribeiro,MG; Chiacchio,SB; Langoni,H.
In the recent years, the wild boar (Sus scrofa) trade has increased in Brazil. The present study aimed to detect Leptospira spp. infection in 308 blood samples from wild boars bred in São Paulo state, Brazil. The microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was performed using 29 serovars. Sixty three (63; 20.45%) animals tested positive against the serovars Hardjo (29/63; 46.0%), Copenhageni (11/63; 17.4%), Pomona (8/63; 12.7%), Pyrogenes (4/63; 6.3%), Wolfii (4/63; 6.3%), Autumnalis (3/63; 4.7%), Icterohaemorraghiae (2/63; 3.1%), and Hardjo-miniswajezak (1/63; 15.8%). These results indicate that captive wild boars were infected with Leptospira spp. and may represent a source of infection to humans and other animals.
